How to get started in Welding
This one is for those lookin to do some rod cookin, yeehaw. From our Working Hands Unite about 20% of Trenchonians are welders- pipeline, specialty, structural, and even one guy working on B-52 Bombers (pretty badass). Rates are all over the place, but we’ve even got a few over $100/ hr. Thats 300k+ working 60hrs before the per diem hits…yeaa buddy
Before we jump in, already a welder? I want to see those beads-send them in here, welder hats for the top 5.
Part I
Step 1-Welding Aint Easy
Understand there is a learning curve, there is a reason that not every welder is knocking down the big bucks. It’s frustrating as hell to start and I guarentee you’ll be sticking dingleberries for a while. Practice may not make you perfect but enough will get you damn good money.
Start following the guys who do it best, the ones that teach. It’ll also give you a good idea of which trench to jump in-pipeline, plants, or even the deep blue sea. See the weld rockstars below
Step 2-Learn while you burn
Two options I recommend here,
1. Get in the field-Helper, laborer, waterboy..it doesn't matter just somewhere where there are welders. Be helpful aka not cocky and with a good attitude, you can strike an arc during breaks or lunch. Once you get hooked, find a close night class to start getting deeper. Learn to stick and TIG will be right around the corner
2. or if you have the cash to get after it for a few months, check out what I call the real deal schools. Western Welding, KWI, Precision, SCWS
I’ll save you a bunch of worthless googling…Find Out More Here
Step 3-Burn to Earn
